Both of my children love books and it warms my heart. For my baby shower that was thrown for me when I was pregnant with my son, guests brought children’s books in lieu of cards. It allowed me to start a little library for him right away. I love encouraging reading, and so in our house, books show up in Easter baskets, in stockings at Christmas, for birthdays, and the list goes on. At garage sales, I hit the cardboard boxes on the ground filled with children’s books. At $.25 a pop you know you’re getting a good deal and the kids LOVE having new books at home to read.
I’ve really tried to get my son to love the library, but at age 4 1/2, he gets too distracted by the fish tank in the reading corner and the Wii console set up in the activity area. Regardless, at home, both kids love sitting down for a story, and so do I. My almost two-year-old would read books all day with someone if she could. She’ll plop right down in your lap and jibber jabber throughout the entire thing pointing to all of the little details she can find. How awesome is that?

Today I thought I’d share my toddler’s 10 favorite books. They’re actually some of my favorites too. They’re not necessarily classics like Goodnight Moon. In my opinion, some of these are even better. Many of them are animal-related, and a few are touch-and-feel. Any books that engage the kids are usually a hit. Here are her top picks:

Good Morning, Good Night by Piggie Toes Press

This touchable book is perfect for toddlers and features animals waking up in the morning and then going to bed at night after a busy day. The best part of the book is at the end when your child gets to “tuck” the child in the book into bed with a piece of soft material that mimics a real blanket.

Animal Hide & Seek by Stephen Cartwright

This is a touch-and-feel Usborne book that requires children to open a flap on each page to find an animal. Sprinkled on each page are other little animals my daughter loves to point out, like worms, frogs and bees. There are fun textures on each and every page from rubbery and soft to sparkly and bumpy. This one always received high scores from both my kids.

My Little Word Book by Roger Priddy

What a great book for toddlers learning their first words. The colors in this book are vibrant and bright, and the 300+ photos cover everything from body parts and animals to vehicles and landscapes. I can’t say enough good things about this book. There’s so much inside to discover and it’s amazing to see how much your child retains after reading it with you just one or two times!

Duck Goes Potty by Michael Dahl

Ok, now this one is hilarious. Duck Goes Potty is about a duck who’s learning to use the potty. The part that children enjoy the most are the little mistakes that Duck makes along the way like falling into the potty and leaving a certain surprise on the floor. My oldest still loves this book and we enjoy reading this one together because it makes us laugh out loud each and every time.

Eight Silly Monkeys by Steve Haskamp
There’s nothing special about the story in this book, since we’re all quite familiar with the song, but it’s the illustrations and the tactile monkey faces that make this one a winner. Kids love to see what the monkeys are doing on each page, and as you progress through the story, the monkey faces you see on the front cover start disappearing until there’s only one monkey face left. It’s great for teaching counting and so much fun to anticipate what crazy and silly things the monkeys will be doing next!

Gossie by Olivier Dunrea

This book is a hoot. Gossie loves his bright red boots, until one day – they are gone! He looks everywhere for his boots, and finally finds them. . .but somewhere he would have never looked. The book teaches a sweet lesson about sharing and is a quick and easy read for parents.

Buzz, Buzz Busy Bees by Dawn Bentley

Buzz, Buzz, Busy Bees follows a similar format to Eight Silly Monkeys, but in this story, kids learn lots of farm animal sounds. Each page is almost like a look-and-find too. There are bugs, butterflies and dragonflies scattered throughout the book that are fun to spot. The ending brings all of the animals together in a fun lesson about why bees are always so busy.

Yummy, Yucky by Leslie Patricelli

This is a quick and simple read, but it’s one that even the youngest little ones can relate to. Each page of the book shows pictures of things that are yummy and then those that don’t taste so great. We get lots of laughs over the yucky things like worms and mom’s coffee. The end of the book compiles a collage of yummy and yucky things, and allows for further conversation about what’s safe to eat and what should probably be avoided.

A Cuddle for Little Duck by Claire Freedman & Caroline Pedler

This is such a sweet and heart-warming book. Little duck starts his day with his mama and then goes to explore on his own, playing and splashing with his friends until he’s so tired all he can do is collapse in his mama’s feathers at the end of the day. I love this book and the kids seem to relate to the cute, energetic, little duck.

Little Bunny’s Bedtime by Jane Johnson

Mama bunny tucks her little ones in for the night, but one little bunny just will not go to bed. His mama tries everything to get him to sleep. Finally, after all of the fun, he flops down asleep and his mama is so relieved. That is, until she hears one of her other little bunnies calling for her from the bedroom. Both parents and kids will enjoy this tiring, yet endearing rendition of what could be compared to a normal evening many families experience with toddlers in the home.

I hope you check out my toddler’s 10 favorite books for your family. They really are great reads and your toddler is sure to fall in love with at least one of them. And as always, please share some of your child’s favorites in the comments. I’d love to hear from you!
