You already know that we're big peanut butter fans here at the house. . .our dog Belle, included. Some of her favorite treats are these Peanut Butter Pumpkin Treats but let me tell you what, these homemade peanut butter Cheerio dog treats take the cake.
Belle knows she's getting something good when the kids are asking to taste her treats. 🙂 Believe it or not, these 5-ingredient dog treats are super easy to make and are made with items you probably already have in your pantry and fridge!
Peanut Butter Cheerio Dog Treats
Ingredients
- ¼ cup natural creamy peanut butter
- 2 cups Honey Nut Cheerios
- 1 cup flour
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- In a large microwave bowl, warm the peanut butter in the microwave until soft enough to pour, 30 seconds - a minute.
- Add the rest of the ingredients to the peanut butter and mix well.
- Form 1-inch sized balls, packing the dough tightly.
- Place on a greased baking sheet.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes.
- Allow to cool and store in an airtight container.
These will last for several days in an airtight container. To get a few more days out of the treats, place them in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
I use natural peanut butter for these dog treats, and always make sure I have a jar on hand. Her nose finds this peanut butter like nobody's business. I love to use this stuff in her Kong toys, too. She's so spoiled. I'll just put that out there right now. 😉
Okay, so back to these treats. . .they're so easy. You just combine all of the ingredients, roll the mixture into one-inch balls and bake. If you have a smaller dog or want to use these as training treats, you can make smaller treats and get even more treats out of a batch.
I usually get about 18 treats out of one batch and they go. . .fast.
Just trying to get these pictures taken was a feat in itself. There she was with her nose all in my business.
Before you see the photos of her devouring one of these treats, let's talk a little bit about texture so you know what to expect. After these homemade peanut butter cheerio dog treats are baked, they harden a bit and become a little crumbly.
I always tell myself to make them a bit smaller next time so she can eat the whole thing in one bite, but nope. . .I always roll the treats a bit larger than necessary. Even if a few crumbs fly, they're cleaned up as soon as they hit the floor. She'll make sure no crumb is left behind. 🙂
Belle is pretty patient for a puppy, but if I hold this in front of her face for too long. . .
. . .she just gets closer and closer until she jumps up and basically steals it out of my hand.
And so it goes with Cheerios and peanut butter. Your dog is going to go crazy over these treats. I guarantee it.

Just tried these for my dog. He loved them! OF course, there isn't too many food items he doesn't like. But since I try to keep him grain free, I substituted garbanzo flour for regular flour. I also only had plain cheerios so I used those & just added about a Tbs. of honey. These are great & so quick & easy! Definitely a do over recipe! Thanks for sharing! I will freeze a second batch I already made
Sara
Great substitutions!! I'm so glad your pup enjoyed them!
Aprille
Made these for my doggies last week, i used coconut oil instead of vegtable oil and they were a big hit!!! Making more today but doubling the recipe!!! Thanks for sharing this!!!

Terry
I made these just now he likes them even though they are crumbling I gave it to him outside so I put the rest in freezer
Sara
Yes, the treats do tend to crumble a bit. I love the idea of making a bunch and then storing some in the freezer!
Wendy
If you make the balls smaller do you still bake for the same amount of time?
Daeja

Just made for my next door neighbors dog. He stops by my house everyday after his walk. Usually when he gets a treat he saves it for at least a few min. but not these. He can't get enough. Will continue to make in the future. Thanks for the great recipe.
Sara
I love that story! So glad he's enjoying them. Belle sure loves them, too!

Looks like a wonderful recipe my do would LOVE! Can I sub the oil with coconut oil? ?
Sara
I've never made them with coconut oil but I don't see why not. Let us know how they turn out if you try it!
Larissa
Hi, these look lovely! I'd be afraid of eating them myself before my dog gets to them! How long would these stay fresh for do you think?
Thanks for sharing your recipe x
Sara
Maybe about a week or so? I'd make sure to put them in the fridge to keep them fresh!
Jill Gardner
HI! What kind of flour do you recommend? Thanks
Sara
Whole wheat flour if possible!
Katelyn Hall
My puppies loved these! A little crumbly, but otherwise great great recipe.

I just made these for my dog but notice that there is a lot of oil in recipe is that the correct amount 1/2 cup I rolled them into balls but still very greasy don't know if that much oil is good for my dog
Mfsfjr
I used a lot less oil the second time I made them, cut back to just 2 Tbsp (so only 1/4 as much as the original recipe). The first time when I made them as is, they were a greasy mess and my dogs weren't too thrilled with them. The version with less oil was a much bigger hit, probably because they tasted more like peanut butter and less like an oil slick.

Could i use all puprose flour?
Sara
You could. I use wheat flour just because it's better for the dog.
Megan
Do you need to use natural creamy peanut butter?
Sara
Natural peanut butter is better for dogs.
Kristie
I was wondering if I could use pumpkin spice Cheerios instead of the honey nut??
Sara
You would just need to check the ingredients to make sure there was nothing harmful to dogs. Some spices can be harmful.
Lauren
Made these for our baby girl for a quick snack on her 5th birthday. I followed the recipe exactly. Super quick and easy. Lily loves these so much that I decided to make an extra batch to give to a friends dog! Will make these again for sure!!!
Sara
I'm so glad Lily enjoyed the treats! It is so sweet that you pampered her on her 5th birthday!❤️?
Bri
I tried to triple the recipe for more but it was very oily and crumbly.
Tip to self DONT TRIPLE it.
Jodi
Hi there,
I made these for my dog yesterday and sadly he will not eat them. While I was preparing them he was very excited, I know he could could smell the peanut butter. After they were baked-no interest at all. I warmed them so he could smell more of the peanut butter, still no interest. Ideas?
Thank you-we appreciate you're website.
Sara
Well, Jodi, I'm baffled. Did you try giving him the treats while they were still warm - even before you tried warming them again? I'm wondering if it was just the temperature that turned him off?
Sue Miranda

Sara
I'm so glad your puppies enjoyed them!
Amanda
Hi could you substitute the vegetable oil for apple sauce?
Sara
Well, in regular baking you can sub applesauce for vegetable oil 1:1 so I'd say it's worth a shot!
Carolinn
I'm going to make these for my dog, he loves peanut butter and cheerios so I know he will love these! Thank you!
Kim Pignataro

I'm definitely going to treat my pawrecious fur baby to these!!
I felt compelled to share this...
CHECK THE INGREDIENT LABEL on your PEANUT BUTTER!!
PLEASE make sure there is NO XYLITOL, an artificial sweetener that some brands of peanut butter have... It has been known to kill dogs if ingested.
Carolyn
Made these for my 4 dogs and they love them. I used regular cheerios to cut down on the sugar. I think I will try a little less oil next time too. The peanut butter has a lot of oil in it already. Thanks for sharing this recipe. Like I said my dogs just loved them.
Sara
Love the idea of just using the regular Cheerios. Thanks for your comment!
chris wentzel
You did not list eggs when you did the list of ingredients. there fore I wasted a whole batch. Please always double check.
Sara
Hi Chris, the eggs are the last ingredient on the list. Maybe you just didn't scroll down far enough?
Carol
I just made these for my dog and they are really oily.........any idea what may have happened?caro
Sara
Maybe it was the brand of oil? In any case, feel free to cut back a bit on the oil next time to see if it makes a difference for you!
Tricia
These were so easy and my dog looooooooved them! (I took a bite of one cuz they smelled so good, and it wasn’t bad. Lol!) I used the whole grain Cheerios cuz that’s what I had. Thanks for the recipe!
Sara
I'm so glad to hear your pup approved, Tricia!
Vanessa
Thanks for sharing! I love how simple and easy these are to make!

Andrea
I just made this for my dogs!
I had a ripe banana I wanted to use up so I added mashed banana and cut back the oil to 2tbsp. I cut them in half while warm for smaller portions. I’m not sure if the texture is the same but my dogs loved them!
Sara
So glad to hear your dog loved them, Andrea!
Alishka
Love these amazing Homemade Peanut Butter Cheerio Dog Treats, super excited to try this delicious one . Thanks for sharing with us.
Jennifer
Vegetable oil can be deadly to dogs. There needs to be a safer substitution such as coconut oil.
Sara
Vegetable oil is completely safe for dogs in small amounts. Used vegetable oils like those emptied from deep fryers contain acrolein which can be very toxic. The amount of oil used in these treats is safe for your furry friend(s).
Carolinn
I'm going to make these for my dog, he loves peanut butter and cheerios so I know he will love these! Thank you!
JoAnn
Are Any of your treats good for a chubby 4 yr. Old?
Sara
All of the treats I feature on the blog are appropriate for dogs in moderation. Your dog's vet would be the best resource for knowing whether or not your pup has been cleared for treats above and beyond his prescribed diet.
Keith W Ellis
Are they good for dogs with all sugar in the cheerios they aren't even really good for people cuz of the sugar
Sara
Cheerios are okay for dogs in moderation. The plain Cheerios are low in sugar. It's important to remember that these are occasional treats and should not replace a balanced diet formulated for dogs.
