Ingredients

  • BROWNIE LAYER
  • ¾ cup chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour

BUTTER CAKE LAYER

  • 1 stick unsalted butter ½ cup
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  • 3 ½ tablespoons milk
  • 2 large eggs

Instructions

  • BROWNIE LAYER
  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Line a 5x9" loaf pan with aluminum foil and spray with nonstick spray.
  • Melt the chocolate chips and butter over low heat. Remove from heat and whisk in brown sugar until well-mixed.
  • Whisk in an egg and fold in the flour until combined.
  • Pour the batter into the loaf pan and bake for 10-12 minutes.
  • Remove from the oven.
  • BUTTER CAKE LAYER
  • While brownie layer is baking in the oven, in another bowl whisk the softened butter together with the sugar. Add in the eggs one by one.
  • Fold in the baking powder and then the flour, gradually adding the fresh milk a little at a time until the batter is well-mixed.
  • Spread the butter cake layer over the brownie layer (brownie layer will still be warm).
  • Turn oven down to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and bake for 28-20 minutes or until baked through.

Notes

  1. Proper Pan Preparation: Ensure the loaf pan is properly prepared before baking to prevent the cake from sticking. Line the pan with aluminum foil and spray it with nonstick spray to easily lift the cake out after baking. This makes cleanup easier and ensures the cake maintains its shape when removed from the pan.
  2. Even Layering: When spreading the butter cake layer over the brownie layer, ensure it is spread evenly to create a uniform and cohesive texture throughout the cake. Use a spatula or the back of a spoon to gently spread the batter over the brownie layer, taking care not to disturb the brownie layer underneath. Even layering ensures that both layers bake evenly and create a harmonious flavor profile.
  3. Baking Time and Temperature: Monitor the baking time and temperature closely to prevent overbaking or underbaking the cake. Start by baking the brownie layer at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 10–12 minutes until just set. Then, reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees Fahrenheit before adding the butter cake layer, and continue baking for 18–20 minutes until the cake is baked through. Adjust the baking time as needed based on your oven's temperature and the desired level of doneness for the cake.
