Ingredients

  • 2 white cake mixes prepared according to box directions - I used 2 cups water, 1 cup oil, 8 egg whites
  • red and blue food coloring or gel
  • 8 ounces whipped cream cheese
  • 14 ounces sweetened condensed milk
  • 12 ounce carton Cool Whip

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to temperature as directed on box of cake mix.
  • Prepare each cake mix batter according to the box directions in separate bowls.
  • To create the red batter, in one bowl, add red food coloring until desired color is reached.
  • To create the blue batter, in the other bowl, add blue food coloring until desired color is reached.
  • Bake each color in a greased 13x9” cake pan for 25-28 minutes.
  • Allow cakes to cool.
  • To make cream for trifle, combine whipped cream cheese, sweetened condensed milk, and cool whip.
  • Crumble each cake, setting aside ¼ cup of each color for topping.
  • To assemble trifle, alternate each color of cake with a layer of cream. The pattern I followed was blue cake layer, cream, red cake layer, cream, blue cake layer, cream, red cake layer, cream.
  • Sprinkle the remaining cake crumbs on top for garnish.

Notes

  1. Color Consistency: Achieving vibrant and consistent colors for your red, white, and blue layers is essential for a visually appealing trifle. Use food coloring or gel to tint the cake batter to the desired shade, ensuring that each color is evenly distributed. Adjust the amount of coloring used to achieve the intensity of color you desire.
  2. Layering Technique: When assembling the trifle, layering the cake and cream mixture evenly ensures a balanced distribution of flavors and colors throughout. Alternate between the colored cake layers and the cream mixture, spreading each layer evenly to create a visually appealing and delicious dessert. Take care to maintain a consistent pattern to enhance the presentation of the trifle.
  3. Chill for Flavor Infusion: For the best flavor and texture, refrigerate the assembled trifle for at least a few hours before serving. This allows time for the flavors to meld together and for the cream mixture to infuse into the cake layers, resulting in a deliciously moist and flavorful dessert experience. Additionally, chilling the trifle helps it set and makes it easier to slice and serve.
