Baked Apple Donuts

Homemade fresh apple donuts, sprinkled with a crunchy cinnamon sugar. Baked, not fried and so delicious!

Ingredients

For the Donuts:

  • 4 cups flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 4 tablespoons butter melted
  • 2 eggs
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup unsweetened apple sauce
  • 1 ½ cup apples peeled, cored and grated

For the Topping:

  • 4 tablespoons butter melted
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 ½ tablespoons ground cinnamon

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375º Fahrenheit.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, add flour, baking powder, salt, baking soda and cinnamon. Whisk together.
  • In a separate large mixing bowl, add melted butter, eggs, sugar, buttermilk, nutmeg, and applesauce. Mix together until combined.
  • Stir in grated apples.
  • Next, add the dry ingredients and mix until dough is uniform.
  • Transfer dough into a large ziplock bag. Cut one of the bottom corners off.
  • Squeeze dough into a greased donut hole pan.
  • Bake for 12-14 minutes or until the donuts spring back when pressed lightly with your fingertip. Do not over bake or the donuts will be dry.

For the Topping:

  • To make the topping, mix the sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.
  • When donuts are done baking, allow them to cool for 5 minutes.
  • Brush each donut with melted butter.
  • Dip them into the sugar/cinnamon mixture and enjoy!

Notes

  • Place your filling in a piping bag or a Ziplock bag with the tip snipped off to fill the donut pan. 
  • Don’t overfill your pan, only filling them about ¾. 
  • Store your donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days.
