Ingredients

  • ½ cup water
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 ¼ cups milk
  • 1 ½ cups heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ½ cup Kahlua
  • Whipped cream optional
  • Chocolate syrup optional
  • Mini marshmallows optional

Instructions

  • Add water, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt to a medium saucepan. Over medium heat, bring mixture to a rapid simmer while whisking continuously.
  • While continuing to whisk, add milk and heavy cream. Allow to cook until heated through.
  • Remove from heat and add vanilla and Kahlua. Stir until mixed.
  • Pour mixture into mugs, topping with whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and mini marshmallows.

Notes

  • I like to use Kahlua, Bailey’s Irish Cream, rum, vanilla vodka, bourbon or peppermint schnapps for this hot chocolate recipe.
  • Feel free to add as much or as little liquor as you’d like.
  • You can store leftovers in an airtight container, like a mason jar, and keep in the fridge.
