Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon butter softened
  • Slice of wheat bread
  • 1 large egg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Parsley or chives for garnish

Instructions

  • Use the cookie cutter to make a hole in the center of the slice of bread.
  • Butter both sides of the bread and the center.
  • In a non-stick skillet, over medium heat, add the bread and the center.
  • Cook for 4-5 minutes.
  • Flip piece of bread and center over.
  • Crack the egg into the hole taking care not to break the yolk.
  • Season egg with a pinch of salt and pepper.
  • Reduce heat to medium-low and cook 5-6 more minutes or until the egg white and yolk are set.
  • Sprinkle with parsley or chives if desired.

Notes

  1. Watch Your Heat: Keep an eye on the heat level while cooking the egg in a hole to prevent the bread from burning. Medium heat is ideal for achieving a golden-brown crust without overcooking the egg. Adjust the heat as needed to maintain a gentle sizzle in the skillet.
  2. Mind the Yolk: Crack the egg into the hole in the bread carefully to avoid breaking the yolk. A perfectly cooked egg in a hole has a runny yolk that oozes out when cut into, adding richness and flavor to the dish. Be gentle when flipping the bread to ensure the yolk stays intact.
  3. Get Creative with Garnishes: While parsley or chives add freshness and color to the dish, feel free to get creative with additional toppings. Try sprinkling shredded cheese, chopped bacon, diced tomatoes, or avocado slices over the cooked egg for added flavor and texture. Experiment with different combinations to suit your taste preferences.
