HOW TO MAKE A TRIFLE DESSERT FOR VALENTINE'S DAY
Before you get started, make sure you have the following ingredients:
- White box cake mix (prepared according to box directions)
- Red and pink gel food coloring
- Cream cheese, softened
- Sweetened condensed milk
- Cool Whip
- Valentine sprinkles
Once you’ve gathered all your ingredients, preheat the oven to 350ºF and then follow the steps below for a quick and easy Valentine's Day dessert!
MAKING THE CAKES
- Prepare the cake mixes according to the box directions and split the batter equally between four bowls.
- To make the different color variations for the cake:
- Add red gel food coloring to one bowl, creating a rich red color (the amount of food coloring used will vary depending on the brand).
- Add a small amount of pink gel food coloring to the second bowl, creating a light pink color.
- Add pink food coloring and a small amount of red to a third bowl, creating a medium pink color.
- Finally, add pink and red to the last bowl, creating a dark pink color.
**Remember you can always add more, but you can take coloring out.
- Transfer each bowl of batter into a greased 8-inch round cake pan or 8x8-inch square cake pan. Bake for 23-25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool.
- Once the cakes are cooled, crumble each cake, setting aside 2 tablespoons of each color for topping.
ASSEMBLING THE TRIFLE LAYERS
- In a medium bowl, mix whipped cream cheese, sweetened condensed milk and Cool Whip until well combined.
- To assemble the trifle, alternate each color of cake with a layer of cream.
- Continue alternating layers until you run out of cake, leaving a little room at the top of the trifle for the topping.
- Finish the trifle by sprinkling remaining cake crumbs and Valentine sprinkles on top.
VALENTINE'S DAY TRIFLE TIPS
- Have leftover cake or cupcakes from another recipe? This recipe is great for those extra small or unused pieces of cake!
- To make this trifle even more festive, try topping the trifle with some strawberries cut into heart shapes! Watch a tutorial on cutting a strawberry into a heart shape.
- Make sure to let the trifle chill until about an hour before you serve it. This allows the cream to soak into the cake a bit and sets up the dessert so it's simple to scoop.
WHAT OTHER FLAVORS OF CAKE COULD YOU USE IN THE TRIFLE?
If white cake isn’t your preference, feel free to use your favorite cake mix!
