The cool, crisp fall air is already approaching the Midwest. To me, it means comfort food (of course), scheduling a maintenance check for the furnace, stocking up on candles, deep cleaning the house before the snow flies and replacing our summer wardrobes with sweaters, sweatshirts and long pants. To my kids, it means. . .Halloween and the return of hats and mittens. With the latter being definitely the less important of the two.
Sooo. . .Halloween planning in our house starts a bit early. They'd rather see a ghost decoration sitting on top of our mantel than a decoupaged leaf lantern. I can't blame them. Some days I prefer that too. Today I'm sharing this super cool recipe for Magic Potion Punch. That's right. Just the name alone will have your kiddos intrigued.
It's really very simple to make and rather than making a HUGE punch bowl, you can make this by the cup - perfect! I will say that this recipe could be made for a larger group by adjusting the ingredients, however, the whole "fizzing" effect that I'm about to show you may not be as, let's say, "impressive."
Take an 8 oz. cup and add about ⅛ cup lemonade (I just used the powder mix), ⅛ cup grape juice and then fill the rest of the cup with lemon-lime soda. NOW, get ready for the magic! When you add the teaspoon of JELL-O, this magic punch fizzes and bubbles just like a real potion! Lasting only seconds, but long enough to get oohs and ahhs out of the kiddos!
The lemon-lime soda is really one of the key ingredients. If you add the JELL-O and nothing happens, it usually means you don't have enough soda in your concoction. Try to avoid piling more JELL-O powder into the drink because the concentration can become overpowering.
If mixed correctly, this drink is truly delicious and so much fun to serve at a mad scientist or Halloween party. It's also just a great experiment to do in the classroom. The best part is, it's drinkable science!

Unfortunately, I did not get any fizzing or bubbles but they said it was tasty.
Sara
Glad you enjoyed the drink, but sad you didn't see the fizz! You need to ensure you add the Jello at the very end right before it is consumed. Hope you try again and it works for you next time!
jenna
Could you add alcohol to this and still get the same fizzing effect? Thanks!
Sara
I've never tried it, however, I'm not so sure it would work.
Leanna
Could we use premade lemonade instead of powder or concentrate?
Sara
Yes, of course!
Leslie
Could you mix everything like you say for the "punch bowl recipe" except the jello and then have the jello in a bowl off to the side where your guests can add the jello after they pour themselves a cup to keep the bubbling effect?
Sara
YES, absolutely!

Bree
Hey! I LOVE this idea! I want to do it for a Halloween craft program I am doing. I was wondering how big of individual cups do these make? My kiddos are in about 3rd grade and I didn't want to make huge amounts of it and have it.go.to waste. Would the amounts you put above be too big for the kids?
Sara
Hi Bree - You could use 8 0z. disposable punch cups. Just mix some lemonade and grape juice. Fill the individual cups 1/4 full with the mixture. Use a 2-liter bottle of lemon-lime soda to fill the glasses the rest of the way and then allow each child to put a teaspoon of the powder JELLO-O into their cups. If you don't need the fizzing effect, you could either eliminate the JELL-O or use the larger recipe I provided in the comments and just pour from a pitcher!
Bree
Alright, sounds great.Thanks so much!
Susan
You could put the Jello in individual servings by pouring the correct amount in a plastic straw with the end sealed with a lighter and then cut and sealed again. Make them sort of long about 4 per straw so they can cut them open and dump it in all at the same time.
Sara
I love that idea, Susan!

val
Can you make it in a punch bowl and if so how much of what to use
Thanks so much love the idea
Sara
Hi Val, yes you can make this in a punch bowl - it just won't have the same "fizzing" effect. Here's what you'll need!
6 oz. can frozen lemonade concentrate, diluted to 3 c.
8 oz. Welch's grape juice
1 box grape JELL-O
2 c. hot water
1 qt. lemon-lime soda
Mix fruit juices. Dissolve JELL-O in hot water. Add a few ice cubes to cool quickly. Add fruit juices and mix. Just before serving, add the lemon-lime soda.
Kayla
This is awesome! I've seen similar things with ice cream, but they have to be in a big bowl and then they melt 🙁 this is so much better!
Sara
Thanks, Kayla! My kids and I love punch but who wants to make a huge bowl of it when it's just for a few!
Sydney @Tastefully Frugal
How fun is this?! And it sounds good too. Pinning!
