You know when you need just a little sweetness to get you through the day? When you don't want to bake an entire cake because you really don't want that temptation in the house? This Cinnamon Sugar Doughnut Mug Cake is sure to satisfy that sweet tooth!
The recipe is based off of my popular vanilla mug cake. I just made this one taste more like. . .a doughnut. Meant to be enjoyed any time of the day, even at breakfast. 😉
I used a soup crock as my "mug" when making this cake. If you would like to use a traditional mug, make sure it is at least 16 ounces. I love using my soup crock for mug cakes because when you flip the cake out of the mug, it actually looks like a cake - and in this instance - it even looks like a doughnut. A doughnut without a hole of course. 😉
If you do decide to use a crock like I did, check the cake at about 60 seconds to see how it's doing. In a crock it probably won't need much more than that. I find that I leave the cake a bit longer when using a traditional mug.
Now you could just leave it in the mug, but I like to run a butter knife around the edges of the crock and just flip it out onto a plate.
And then I sprinkle on LOTS of cinnamon sugar. . .because it makes me happy.
And I promise it's going to make you happy, too. This isn't spongy in texture like lots of other mug cakes out there. Nope, not this recipe. It's fluffy, moist and sweet - just like a doughnut is supposed to be. So if you have a minute or so to spare in your day, spoil yourself. You'll be glad you did.
Cinnamon Sugar Doughnut Mug Cake
Ingredients
For the Cake
- 4 Tablespoons flour
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- 3 Tablespoons sugar
- ½ Tablespoon butter (softened)
- 4 Tablespoons milk
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
- Pinch of salt
For the Topping
Instructions
- Mix all ingredients in a bowl.
- Pour into greased soup crock or mug (at least 16 ounces).
- Microwave on high for 60-90 seconds.
- Slide a knife around the sides of the cake inside the mug.
- Turn mug upside down, shake gently and transfer cake onto a plate. (optional)
- Sprinkle generously with cinnamon sugar.
Notes
- Proper Mixing Technique: Ensure thorough mixing of the cake batter to achieve a smooth and consistent texture. Pay attention to incorporating the softened butter evenly into the dry ingredients before adding the liquids. This prevents lumps in the batter and ensures a uniform rise during microwaving.
- Microwaving Time: Microwave ovens vary in power, so adjust the cooking time accordingly. Start with the lower end of the suggested time range (60 seconds) and check the cake's doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center. If it comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs, the cake is ready. If not, continue microwaving in short intervals until fully cooked to avoid overcooking and drying out the cake.
- Topping Application: For the perfect finishing touch, generously sprinkle the cinnamon sugar over the warm cake just after removing it from the microwave. The residual heat helps the cinnamon sugar adhere to the cake, creating a deliciously sweet and aromatic crust. If transferring the cake onto a plate, do so gently to preserve its shape, and then immediately sprinkle with cinnamon sugar for maximum flavor.
amy
this was delicious and just what I needed but it was still gooey underneath how can I stop that
Sara
I'm so glad, Amy. Maybe next time, cook it a bit longer?

This doesn't look like what's on the picture.
2/10 wouldn't make again.
Sara
What doesn't look like what's on the picture? Did you use a soup crock when you made the cake? If you did, it should have turned out just like the photo. Let me know and maybe I can help troubleshoot!
Mandi
Omg it does taste like a doughnut! Yummmm! My microwave is pretty old and I think less powerful. i turned mine out and continued to cook it on the plate for another minute. Deeee licious!

I replaced the butter with coconut oil and the milk with almond milk to make it vegan and it came out great! The kids loved it.
Sara
Thanks for sharing your vegan prep! That's so helpful!
Serenity
I'm not sure why people keep saying rude things on your website you are amazing
Sara
You're so sweet, Serenity. Recipes are very subjective and not everyone will love everything I post. And that's okay. My hope is that even if someone tries one of my recipes and doesn't like it, they're still willing to try another. Chances are they'll find at least one winning dish on my site. Thanks so much for your note. Hugs to you!

Sara
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Kim
Quite tasty with a heavy texture. I personally think there was wayyy too much sugar though. Next time I'd have to use a less calorie ridden alternative.
Sara
Yep, you can adjust the sugar to your tastes, Kim!
Nancy
Had this with my morning coffee. Was really good. I will say that the nutmeg was just right.
Sara
I'm so glad to hear this, Nancy! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment!
Jayda
To much nutmeg. Kinda just a blan nutmeg and crunchy cinnamon sugar topping.
Sara
Hi Jayda, maybe skip the nutmeg next time - hope you try it again!

Made this tonight, it was delicious! Thanks! I wish I could leave a pic
Made it as is. The batter seemed too liquidy but it came our perfect, not spongey. I microwaved for 60 sec and it didn't seem done, then +15sec then another +15 sec and it was good
Tiff
Agreed I think 1/8 tsp nutmeg would be better, but I guess it's personal preference. Still good
Sara
i think u should add a smaller amt of nutmeg to the recipe , still super good ?
Peggy
Simple yet delicious satisfies my sweet tooth every time.
