Do you love Reese’s Peanut Butter Eggs as much as I do? They are one of my family's favorites around Easter time. We started experimenting with making our own and we came up with the recipe I'm sharing today.
These creamy peanut butter eggs are dipped into a vanilla coating and marbled with pretty pastel colors. It's such a fun recipe to make with your kids and the perfect festive Easter treat!
HOW TO MAKE EASTER PEANUT BUTTER EGGS
To make these festive peanut butter eggs, you'll need:
- Peanut butter
- Butter
- Brown sugar
- Vanilla
- Salt
- Powdered sugar
- Vanilla candy bark
- Food coloring
These delicious homemade eggs are really easy to make, and although they take some time to chill in the freezer, the preparation won't take you long at all.
So, let's get started making this delicious Easter treat!
In a medium mixing bowl, combine peanut butter, melted butter, brown sugar, vanilla and a dash of salt.
Gradually fold in the powdered sugar (I used my hands when it started getting thick).
Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking sheet. Press the "dough" down with your hands or use a rolling pin to flatten to about ½-inch thick.
Place the baking sheet in the freezer for about 15 minutes or until the dough is firm enough for cutting.
Go ahead and lift the parchment paper and dough off of the baking sheet. Line the same baking sheet again with parchment paper and set it aside.
Using an egg-shaped cookie cutter, cut out the eggs and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
Chill the eggs in the freezer for an hour before starting the dipping process.
HOW TO DIP THE EGGS
- Place two ounces of vanilla bark in three separate small microwave-safe bowls.
- Microwave them in 30-second intervals until the bark is melted.
- Add a different color of food coloring to each bowl and stir well.
Transfer the colored bark to three different ziplock bags and cut a small corner off. In a larger bowl, melt the remaining vanilla bark in the microwave at 30-second intervals.
Using the three different colors in the ziplock bags, randomly drizzle them over top of the bowl of white melted bark. The color will blend together as you dip the eggs.
Place each egg into the dipping mixture.
Using two forks, dip the egg into the melted bark until it is completely covered. Allow the excess to drip off.
Note: When colors in the larger bowl appear faded, squeeze more onto the vanilla bark and continue dipping.
Place the egg on the prepared baking sheet and allow it to harden. After all of the eggs are dipped, chill them for 15 minutes or until the bark has hardened.
CAN I USE MILK CHOCOLATE?
You sure can! The only downside to using milk chocolate for the outer shell is that the eggs won't have the colored marble effect. Otherwise, the process is the same, minus the 3 additional bowls of colored vanilla coating.
HOW DO I MELT CANDY BARK IN THE MICROWAVE?
Put the bark in a microwaveable-safe bowl and follow these steps:
- Set the microwave for 30 seconds.
- Stir the bark thoroughly with a spatula or a fork. The residual heat will help melt the chocolate.
- Repeat until completely melted and smooth. It should only take 2-3 intervals to melt the chocolate.
WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE AN EGG-SHAPED COOKIE CUTTER?
If you don't have an egg-shaped cookie cutter you can use a piece of cardboard shaped like an egg and a sharp knife.
Place the template of the peanut butter mixture and trace around the cardboard with the knife. It will take a bit more time, but it’s totally do-able.
DO THESE TASTE LIKE REESE'S PEANUT BUTTER EGGS?
I'd say this is a good copycat recipe for Reese's White Peanut Butter Eggs. Using milk chocolate like discussed above will create a version that will taste more like the traditional Reese's Peanut Butter Eggs we all know and love.
HOW DO I STORE HOMEMADE PEANUT BUTTER EGGS?
To store these delicious peanut butter eggs, you can either place them in an airtight container to put in the fridge or you can wrap them individually with plastic wrap.
Wrapping them individually will keep them from sticking together in the container. The peanut butter eggs will keep in the fridge for up to a week using either of the methods.
CAN YOU FREEZE PEANUT BUTTER EGGS?
You can! After dipping the eggs in the melted bark, place them into the freezer until they are frozen. Once frozen, transfer the peanut butter eggs to a sealable plastic bag and place the bag back into the freezer.
The eggs will keep for up to 3 months, if stored properly. Simply allow them to thaw in the fridge before eating.
