Readers tend to visit my site over and over for this vanilla mug cake you make right in the microwave. In fact, you all seem to be very hungry for quick treats you can make in the microwave, so when I saw the response to the mug cake, I whipped up recipes for this cinnamon sugar doughnut version and even this delicious single-serve cookie!
Today, I'm sharing a REALLY special recipe for all of my readers who are dog lovers and have furry friends in their homes. This time, it's not a mug cake. . .it's a Mug PUPCAKE. Yep, you heard me right. If we humans get to enjoy quick, homemade microwaveable treats, shouldn't our dogs, as well?
I used my Crock Pot soup bowl to make this cake. Any larger, wider mug should do the trick. This makes a pretty decent sized pupcake, so if you have multiple dogs, you should be able to get away with making one cake and just slicing it into pieces like I did.
How to Make a Pupcake in the Microwave
Ingredients
For the Mug Cake
- 2 tablespoons peanut butter
- 4 tablespoons wheat flour
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- 4 tablespoons water
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Frosting
- 2 tablespoons plain greek yogurt
- 1 tablespoon peanut butter
- Dry dog food (optional)
Instructions
For the Mug Cake
- Heat peanut butter in microwaveable bowl for 30 seconds or until it starts to melt.
- Add the remaining ingredients to the bowl and stir until well-combined.
- Transfer dough to a greased mug or corning ware dish.
- Heat in microwave for 90 seconds.
- Frost while still warm.
For the Frosting
- Combine ingredients and spread on mug cake.
- Sprinkle dry dog food on top of frosting (optional).
You can make this homemade dog treat in the microwave in 90 seconds! The recipe is based off of my "blue ribbon" vanilla mug cake recipe but omits the sugar, butter and milk.
Now, although this dog treat mug cake may be a bit more dry than my human mug cake, to a dog, this is a heavenly treat.
I bet you're wondering what's in that light and fluffy frosting? Peanut butter and greek yogurt!
Belle watched intently as I made her treat, and began getting really excited when I carried her pupcake outside to the deck. She was like, "Mom, is that for me?"
Of course it's for you, silly girl.
She dined by the flowers and the fountain. It was like a 5-star restaurant. 😉
And she licked up every last morsel of that mug pupcake. Did I have any doubts?
And just like any polite pup at a classy, outdoor, 5-star restaurant would do, she finished things off with a big drink from the fountain.
What a dog.
So, there you have it. Another successful dog treat in the books. I think it's safe to say the mug pupcakes were a hit. They're super easy to make and your dogs will love them for sure!

Notes
- Watch the Texture: When microwaving the mug cake, keep an eye on its texture. Overcooking can make it dry and tough, while undercooking may result in a gooey consistency. Adjust the microwave time according to your microwave's power to achieve a moist and fluffy pupcake.
- Mind the Ingredients: Ensure the peanut butter used is dog-friendly, without any added sugar or xylitol, which can be harmful to dogs. Also, opt for whole wheat flour instead of refined flour for a healthier treat. Additionally, if your dog has any food allergies, consider suitable substitutions for ingredients like wheat flour.
- Customize with Caution: While adding dry dog food as a topping can add a fun crunch for your pup, be mindful of the size and hardness of the kibble. Choose smaller pieces that won't pose a choking hazard, and avoid hard treats that could potentially damage your dog's teeth. Always supervise your dog while enjoying this treat to ensure they're eating safely.

I just made this for my dog’s birthday! What a yummy treat! Smells just like a fresh baked peanut butter cookie when it is done! I added 100% natural bacon bits on top as “sprinkles”. Thanks so much for such a great recipe!
Sara
I love your addition of the bacon bits!!
Marlena K.
Do you think I could add some shredded carrot?
Sara
I'm not sure they would really "soften" in time but if that isn't important to you, you probably could. Not sure if they would affect the baking or not. If you try it, please report back!

I used Almond Butter instead, it was so easy to whip up. My pup loved it for a birthday treat!
Sara
Almond butter was a great substitute!
Yvonne
I love this recipe but wanted to point out that the alcohol in vanilla extract may be toxic to dogs. Obviously you're not giving them the whole bottle, but I did want to point this out in case anyone is concerned. I ended up subbing the vanilla with a sprinkle of cinnamon instead.
Sara
Hi Yvonne, you're right. The amount of vanilla extract in this recipe is not enough to cause harm. Hope your pup enjoyed the treat!
Lori
It probably burns off when you microwave it.
Sandy
I used this great recipe to make a pupcake for my dog’s birthday and she loved it! There were no crumbs left behind. I used a soup bowl to microwave it in and I greased the sides using virgin coconut oil; it worked out so well! Thank you for sharing this!

I'm so glad your dog enjoyed her pupcake!

I made this for my pup Jasmines 7th birthday. She loves peanut butter so I figured she’d love this. I made it the night before and refrigerated it after frosting in a container, it held up perfectly!! It was the perfect size because my dogs are small so they each got a slice with Jasmine having the biggest of course, she went crazy for it!! I’ll be making it again in the future for sure!!
Sara
I'm so glad Jasmine and her siblings enjoyed her pupcake! Your comment made me smile! Thanks so much for taking time to share your experience with the recipe!
Naomi
I'm so glad to have found a mug cake for dogs! Today's my dog, Red's birthday and I didn't want to go through the hassle of making a big pan of cake for just him so this is perfect! Can't wait to make this for him!
Sara
Happy Birthday, Red! I hope he enjoyed the mug cake, Naomi!
Vanessa
Hello um read it and i was wondering how do you cook it? ?
Vanessa
Oh wait never mind i found it ??
Bella
By mug do you actually mean a MUG, like the ones you drink coffee out of? Also I don’t have wheat flour, is regular flour ok?
Sara
I used a crock but yes, you can also use a mug. Just make sure it's larger and wider. Regular flour is okay although wheat is best for your pup!

Not something I have heard of before
Sara
It's a recipe I whipped up. Mug cakes are so nice for a quick, delicious treat. I thought, why not make a dog-friendly version, too!

Yes this sounds like a human cake if you look at the ingredients ?
Marlene Schlegel
That is a great dog treat. Love all the pictures! Especially the one of her drinking out of your fountain and the last one where she is licking her mouth and loving it.
Sara
Yes, she's quite the dog. I love how quick and easy these mug pupcakes are to make!
