HOW TO MAKE PUMPKIN OREO BALLS
Before you get started, make sure you have the following ingredients:
- Oreo chocolate sandwich cookies
- Cream cheese
- Orange candy melts
- Green candy melts
- Pretzels sticks
- Small eyeball candies
- Milk chocolate chips
Once you’ve gathered all your ingredients, follow the steps below for an absolutely irresistible festive fall treat!
MAKING THE OREO BALLS
- Place the Oreo cookies in a food processor or blender. Blend until they become fine crumbs.
- Transfer the crumbs to a large mixing bowl. Add the cream cheese to crumbs and beat with an electric mixer until mixture is uniform.
- Use a cookie scoop to make 1-inch balls. Roll them in your hands until they are round and smooth.
- Place the Oreo balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and refrigerate for 15 minutes.
SHAPING AND DIPPING THE OREO BALLS
- Melt the green candy melts as directed on the package and transfer to a small ziplock baggie. Cut a small corner of the bag off and pipe leaves onto a piece of parchment paper. Place the candy leaves in the refrigerator until hardened.
- Use a toothpick to create the lines of the pumpkins. Place the pumpkins back in the refrigerator for an additional 10 minutes.
- In a microwave-safe bowl, melt orange candy melts in 30-second intervals, stirring often. Using a fork, dip each Oreo ball into the melted chocolate until fully covered. Allow the excess chocolate to drip off.
- Place dipped balls onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
ADDING FINAL TOUCHES TO THE OREO PUMPKINS
Make sure to add the eyes, pretzel and leaf while the candy coating is still "wet."
- Carefully place eyeballs on the pumpkin face.
- Press ⅓ of a pretzel stick into the top of the pumpkin along with a leaf.
- Put chocolate chips into a small ziplock baggie and microwave in 30-second intervals until melted. Cut a very small corner of the baggie off and pipe a mouth onto each pumpkin face, then refrigerate the pumpkins until candy coating has hardened.
TIPS FOR MAKING PUMPKIN-SHAPED OREO BALLS
- If melted orange candy melts are too thick, stir in a little coconut oil.
- Be sure to keep these Oreo balls refrigerated until you’re ready to serve!
- Don't let these pumpkin Oreo balls sit out for more than an hour!
- If you don't have a food processor, you can use a gallon size Ziploc bag and crush the cookies into fine pieces inside the bag with a rolling pin.
- To make these treats even more festive, add sprinkles to your pumpkin Oreo balls!
CAN I USE FLAVORED OREOS FOR THE TRUFFLE BALLS?
Yes! Feel free to experiment with other flavors of Oreos! You can use pumpkin spice Oreos, Halloween Oreos or even Golden Oreos mixed with pumpkin spice flavoring.
Try not to use double-stuffed Oreos for this recipe, as it won’t leave you with the right consistency for the truffles.
WHAT'S THE SECRET FOR GETTING THE EYES AND LEAF TO STICK ON THE PUMPKIN?
You need to place the eyeballs and the leaves on the pumpkin balls while the candy coating is still wet.
If you accidentally allow the candy coating to dry before you get the eyes and leaves on, try using a toothpick and a little bit of the melted candy or chocolate to stick the eyes and the leaves onto the pumpkins.
HOW TO STORE PUMPKIN OREO TRUFFLES
You can store the pumpkin treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for around 5-6 days.
CAN YOU FREEZE PUMPKIN OREO BALLS?
Yes, you can freeze these pumpkin balls in an airtight container in the freezer for 4-5 months.
I would suggest leaving off the pretzel stems if you plan to freeze these treats. The pretzels will get soggy when defrosting after taking them out of the freezer.
You could either leave the stems off or try to push them into the truffle balls once they have thawed. It may crack the candy coating a bit but it should still look fine!
