Readers tend to visit my site over and over for this vanilla mug cake you make right in the microwave. In fact, you all seem to be very hungry for quick treats you can make in the microwave, so when I saw the response to the mug cake, I whipped up recipes for this cinnamon sugar doughnut version and even this delicious single-serve cookie!
Today, I'm sharing a REALLY special recipe for all of my readers who are dog lovers and have furry friends in their homes. This time, it's not a mug cake. . .it's a Mug PUPCAKE. Yep, you heard me right. If we humans get to enjoy quick, homemade microwaveable treats, shouldn't our dogs, as well?
I used my Crock Pot soup bowl to make this cake. Any larger, wider mug should do the trick. This makes a pretty decent sized pupcake, so if you have multiple dogs, you should be able to get away with making one cake and just slicing it into pieces like I did.
How to Make a Pupcake in the Microwave
Ingredients
For the Mug Cake
- 2 tablespoons peanut butter
- 4 tablespoons wheat flour
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- 4 tablespoons water
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Frosting
- 2 tablespoons plain greek yogurt
- 1 tablespoon peanut butter
- Dry dog food (optional)

For the Mug Cake
- Heat peanut butter in microwaveable bowl for 30 seconds or until it starts to melt.
- Add the remaining ingredients to the bowl and stir until well-combined.
- Transfer dough to a greased mug or corning ware dish.
- Heat in microwave for 90 seconds.
- Frost while still warm.
For the Frosting
- Combine ingredients and spread on mug cake.
- Sprinkle dry dog food on top of frosting (optional).
You can make this homemade dog treat in the microwave in 90 seconds! The recipe is based off of my "blue ribbon" vanilla mug cake recipe but omits the sugar, butter and milk.
Now, although this dog treat mug cake may be a bit more dry than my human mug cake, to a dog, this is a heavenly treat.
I bet you're wondering what's in that light and fluffy frosting? Peanut butter and greek yogurt!
Belle watched intently as I made her treat, and began getting really excited when I carried her pupcake outside to the deck. She was like, "Mom, is that for me?"
Of course it's for you, silly girl.
She dined by the flowers and the fountain. It was like a 5-star restaurant. 😉
And she licked up every last morsel of that mug pupcake. Did I have any doubts?
And just like any polite pup at a classy, outdoor, 5-star restaurant would do, she finished things off with a big drink from the fountain.
What a dog.
So, there you have it. Another successful dog treat in the books. I think it's safe to say the mug pupcakes were a hit. They're super easy to make and your dogs will love them for sure!

Notes
- Watch the Texture: When microwaving the mug cake, keep an eye on its texture. Overcooking can make it dry and tough, while undercooking may result in a gooey consistency. Adjust the microwave time according to your microwave's power to achieve a moist and fluffy pupcake.
- Mind the Ingredients: Ensure the peanut butter used is dog-friendly, without any added sugar or xylitol, which can be harmful to dogs. Also, opt for whole wheat flour instead of refined flour for a healthier treat. Additionally, if your dog has any food allergies, consider suitable substitutions for ingredients like wheat flour.
- Customize with Caution: While adding dry dog food as a topping can add a fun crunch for your pup, be mindful of the size and hardness of the kibble. Choose smaller pieces that won't pose a choking hazard, and avoid hard treats that could potentially damage your dog's teeth. Always supervise your dog while enjoying this treat to ensure they're eating safely.

This was easy to make and our dog Angel loved her piece. We will give it to her over a couple of days.

So happy to hear this, Vicki!

I made this for my Great Dane’s 13 birthday.
I added a small grated carrot because he loves them and left out the vanilla because vanilla and carrot doesn’t sound nice.
He loves it, thanks for the easy recipe 🙂

BAKING POWDER is POISONOUS to DOGS !
VANILLA EXTRACT is TOXIC to DOGS!
DON'T JUST FOLLOW, do your research before feeding your pets stuff!
Sara
Hi Anne, I would never recommend anything that would be harmful to my readers' pets and always do my research. You are correct in saying you should not feed your dog straight baking powder or vanilla extract, however, the 1/2 teaspoon of each used in this dog mug cake should not cause any problems. The alcohol in the vanilla extract actually evaporates during the cooking process. It would take far more than a 1/2 teaspoon of these ingredients to be toxic. I appreciate your concern.
Alva
I just made this for my dog's fifth birthday today, and let her share a slice amongst the other pups, however I had included the vanilla extract within the steps, and then I went to look up and read through the comments here, which lead me to find out that vanilla extract is kinda harmful for dogs. I know that it's only half a teaspoon, which shouldn't harm the dogs, I hope (emphasis on hope), but I am still honestly worried that something bad could happen-
Sara
Hi Alva, vanilla extract can be toxic to dogs if the alcohol is not "cooked" or "baked" out. The alcohol in vanilla extract evaporates during the cooking/baking process, making it safe in small quantities. I hope your pup has a wonderful birthday!

This was the best dog birthday cake. Easy to make with no fuss. The texture was great after cooking and just popped out of the mug. The icing was easy to spread and my dog loved it. I put half away for tomorrow. Poppy_spoodle says Thank you
