Readers tend to visit my site over and over for this vanilla mug cake you make right in the microwave. In fact, you all seem to be very hungry for quick treats you can make in the microwave, so when I saw the response to the mug cake, I whipped up recipes for this cinnamon sugar doughnut version and even this delicious single-serve cookie!
Today, I'm sharing a REALLY special recipe for all of my readers who are dog lovers and have furry friends in their homes. This time, it's not a mug cake. . .it's a Mug PUPCAKE. Yep, you heard me right. If we humans get to enjoy quick, homemade microwaveable treats, shouldn't our dogs, as well?
I used my Crock Pot soup bowl to make this cake. Any larger, wider mug should do the trick. This makes a pretty decent sized pupcake, so if you have multiple dogs, you should be able to get away with making one cake and just slicing it into pieces like I did.
How to Make a Pupcake in the Microwave
Ingredients
For the Mug Cake
- 2 tablespoons peanut butter
- 4 tablespoons wheat flour
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- 4 tablespoons water
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Frosting
- 2 tablespoons plain greek yogurt
- 1 tablespoon peanut butter
- Dry dog food (optional)
Instructions
For the Mug Cake
- Heat peanut butter in microwaveable bowl for 30 seconds or until it starts to melt.
- Add the remaining ingredients to the bowl and stir until well-combined.
- Transfer dough to a greased mug or corning ware dish.
- Heat in microwave for 90 seconds.
- Frost while still warm.
For the Frosting
- Combine ingredients and spread on mug cake.
- Sprinkle dry dog food on top of frosting (optional).
You can make this homemade dog treat in the microwave in 90 seconds! The recipe is based off of my "blue ribbon" vanilla mug cake recipe but omits the sugar, butter and milk.
Now, although this dog treat mug cake may be a bit more dry than my human mug cake, to a dog, this is a heavenly treat.
I bet you're wondering what's in that light and fluffy frosting? Peanut butter and greek yogurt!
Belle watched intently as I made her treat, and began getting really excited when I carried her pupcake outside to the deck. She was like, "Mom, is that for me?"
Of course it's for you, silly girl.
She dined by the flowers and the fountain. It was like a 5-star restaurant. 😉
And she licked up every last morsel of that mug pupcake. Did I have any doubts?
And just like any polite pup at a classy, outdoor, 5-star restaurant would do, she finished things off with a big drink from the fountain.
What a dog.
So, there you have it. Another successful dog treat in the books. I think it's safe to say the mug pupcakes were a hit. They're super easy to make and your dogs will love them for sure!

Microwave Mug Pupcake

Notes
- Watch the Texture: When microwaving the mug cake, keep an eye on its texture. Overcooking can make it dry and tough, while undercooking may result in a gooey consistency. Adjust the microwave time according to your microwave's power to achieve a moist and fluffy pupcake.
- Mind the Ingredients: Ensure the peanut butter used is dog-friendly, without any added sugar or xylitol, which can be harmful to dogs. Also, opt for whole wheat flour instead of refined flour for a healthier treat. Additionally, if your dog has any food allergies, consider suitable substitutions for ingredients like wheat flour.
- Customize with Caution: While adding dry dog food as a topping can add a fun crunch for your pup, be mindful of the size and hardness of the kibble. Choose smaller pieces that won't pose a choking hazard, and avoid hard treats that could potentially damage your dog's teeth. Always supervise your dog while enjoying this treat to ensure they're eating safely.

Made this tonight for our Gracie’s 5th birthday. I left out the vanilla and smashed about 1/4 of a banana instead. Worked perfectly! Frosted and decorated with her favorite biscuits. She’s a happy girl! Thank you for this simple recipe.

Thank you so much! I made this yesterday for my dog's 5th birthday, and she loved it! My dog is allergic to peanut butter, so I used tahini instead, and it turned out great! My dog devoured it.

Is there anything you can substitute for the peanut butter?
Sara
You could try almond butter.
Lori
An easy fun recipe! Made it to celebrate our o up’s gotcha day today. Only have her a quarter since she’s a little Shih tzu and she cleaned the plate! I put real bacon bits on top as sprinkles. Yum!
Sara
I'm so glad your pup enjoyed her treat! I love your "sprinkle" idea!
Stacy
I made a half portion and it was the perfect size for my little one's first birthday! Added 2 chopped up doggy choc chips on top for extra yum! One very happy pup, I think he especially loved the icing! 🙂

Just made this today for my two year old Weimaraner, Allegiance Ann Gray! Major life and time saver and she loved it! I added some of her favorite frozen fruits on top instead of dog food, just to give it that little extra flair ?? I’m sure her Insta buddies and her siblings will love to have this recipe too. Thanks so much, it’s a real hit!
Sara
So glad Allegiance loved it! Thanks for sharing!

My Pupcake didn’t work and I used all the same measurements and everything
Sara
Oh no. What happened?

Today is my fur baby, Wrangler's 4th birthday! I've been so busy this week with work, the water heater going out, and his brother's neuter surgery so I haven't had much time to whip up a cake. Found this recipe and I think it's going to save the day! I will definitely let you know what the boys think of it. Thank you for sharing this!

I dont have wheat on hand would regular flour be ok for him? His birthday is tomorrow , would love to make this!
Sara
Regular flour would be okay. I just wouldn't use it consistently over wheat.
Fernanda
I’ve read vanilla extract isn’t safe for dogs!
Sara
Hi Fernanda, that's true but only in large amounts and it's actually the alcohol in the extract that's not safe for them. There isn't enough vanilla extract in the recipe to be harmful, especially if you use imitation vanilla extract which has an even smaller amount of alcohol than pure. If it really concerns you, feel free to omit it.
Sarah
The alcohol evaporates so very unlikely there is any alcohol left.

It's my dog Marley's "birthday". We found her on the side of the road one day and brought her home. We think she's about four, and today is the anniversary of when we got her so we celebrated today! Really easy to make!
Sara
Happy Birthday to Marley! I hope she enjoyed her pupcake!

Made this for my shitzu x bichon for her 8th birthday today, I put dog choc drops on top to make it an extra special treat and she's loving it! I made it in a mug this time but think in future ill use a flatter dish as its easier to portion up for a smaller pup 🙂
Sara
So glad your pup enjoyed it!
Cody
What would be a good substitute for wheat flour? My dog has to eat grain free
Sara
Cody, you could try coconut flour. Good luck!
