HOW TO MAKE OREO DIRT CAKE
To make this festive Earth Day cake, you'll need:
- Vegetable oil
- Buttermilk
- Eggs
- Vanilla
- Flour
- Sugar
- Cocoa powder
- Baking soda
- Baking powder
- Salt
- Oreo cookies
- Butter
- Powdered sugar
- Heavy whipping cream
- Green icing pouch (use the round tip)
- Edible Easter grass
- Gummy worms
MAKING THE CAKE
- Combine the vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla in a large mixing bowl and beat with a hand mixer until fully incorporated.
- Slowly pour in the hot water while continuing to mix.
- Next, add the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Beat until the batter is smooth and creamy.
- Split the batter evenly between the two prepared baking pans. Bake the cakes for 35-40 minutes and allow to cool completely.
MAKING THE FROSTING
- Using a food processor or blender, crush the Oreos into crumbs. Set them to the side.
- Then, beat the butter and powdered sugar 1 cup at a time.
- Add the vanilla and heavy whipping cream and beat again until fully incorporated.
- Measure out ½ cup of Oreo crumbs and set them to the side. Then, mix the remaining crumbs into the frosting.
FROSTING THE CAKE
- Grab the bowl of Oreo frosting you just whipped up.
- Ensure the two cakes are cooled.
- Then, place one layer of cake on a serving plate. Cover with a layer of frosting and place the second layer of cake on top of the frosted layer.
- Frost top and sides with remaining frosting.
DECORATING THE CAKE
- Sprinkle the remaining Oreo crumbs on top and randomly press small handfuls of crumbs onto the sides of the cake, creating a “dirt-like” look.
- Using the round tip on the green icing pouch, pipe blades of grass around the cake.
- Add edible Easter grass sprigs to the top of the cake.
- Spread some gummy worms around the top of the cake to finish up the decorations.
Now, invite some friends and family over, find something Earth Day-related to watch on the Discovery Channel and enjoy this festive dessert!
COULD I MAKE CUPCAKES INSTEAD OF THE CAKE?
Sure! This recipe will make about 2 dozen cupcakes. However, you will want to bake the cupcakes for less time. If you choose to make cupcakes, you’ll only need to bake them for 20-25 minutes.
Then, you can simply frost them and add a little sprig of edible Easter grass and a gummy worm on top.
CAN I ADD OREOS TO THE CAKE BATTER?
You can, but you may need to decrease the amount of flour so you don’t dry out your cake. Oreos would be considered a dry ingredient. Keep in mind I have not tried this out myself so please let me know in the comments if you attempt it!
HOW DO I STORE LEFTOVERS?
Since the frosting is made with butter and cream, you will need to store any leftover cake in the refrigerator.
Wrap the cake in plastic wrap or place it in an airtight container. You can refrigerate any leftover dirt cake for up to a week.
