Once summer has passed and the weather starts to cool down around here, our grill doesn't see much action. Because let's be honest, who wants to stand outside in the bitter cold waiting for food to cook?
Even though summer is coming to a close, it doesn't mean we need to say goodbye to one of our favorite grilled foods of all time. . .delicious, juicy burgers.
When grilling isn't an option, I ALWAYS choose to make my hamburgers in the air fryer. The air fryer makes cooking burgers super easy, and they always turn out perfectly browned and juicy!
HOW TO MAKE EASY AIR FRYER BURGERS
To a make hamburgers in the air fryer, you'll obviously need an air fryer and the following:
- Ground beef
- Worcestershire sauce
- Salt, pepper and garlic powder
You can obviously use whatever you like to season your burgers, but I keep it simple with just a few select ingredients. Once all of the ingredients are mixed together, start forming the burger patties.
HOW DO YOU SHAPE HAMBURGER PATTIES?
I have three favorite ways to shape burger patties:
- Use a burger press (this is my hubby's preferred method).
- Try pressing the beef into a mason jar lid to create uniform-sized burgers.
- Just use your hands? (this is my preferred method).
Go ahead and place the patties into the air fryer basket. You want to make sure you don't stack them or they won't cook evenly.
It only takes about 10 minutes until the burgers will be ready. I always like to flip them at about seven minutes.
TO WHAT TEMPERATURE SHOULD I COOK MY BURGER?
To be honest, burger temps are pretty subjective. I like mine medium rare while I have friends who will only eat them well done.
Here's a quick internal temp reference for cooking your burgers (for a more comprehensive temperature cooking guide, click here):
- Well Done - 160º
- Medium Well - 150º - 155º
- Medium - 140º - 145º
- Medium Rare - 130º - 135º
- Rare - 120º - 125º
If you're cooking larger patties, your cook time will be longer. You'll most likely need to cook them for 16-18 minutes, flipping halfway through.
WHAT ARE THE BEST BURGER TOPPINGS?
Again, very subjective, but here's a short list of some of my favorites:
- Mushrooms
- Tomatoes
- Eggs
- Lettuce
- Avocado
- Bacon
- Pickles
- Onions
- Cheese
- Condiments
For the burgers we're making today, I just grabbed some of the classics.
If you're feeding a larger family or group, arrange the toppings on a plate or platter and allow everyone to choose their own!
CAN YOU AIR FRY FROZEN BURGERS?
If you're short on time and have some burgers in the freezer you can certainly air fry them from frozen, yes!
You'll want to set your air fryer to 375º Fahrenheit and cook for 15-20 minutes. Flip the burgers halfway through cooking.
Digital thermometers help to ensure a perfect burger every time, so make sure to use one!
ARE AIR FRYER BURGERS BETTER FOR YOU?
If you normally fry your burgers in butter or oil, then yes, air fryer burgers are better for you. But air frying is pretty similar to grilling in terms of "healthy eating."
Now, if we're talking convenience, in my opinion, air frying is easier than grilling and you can do it indoors.
Speaking of indoor appliances, have you seen the new Ninja Foodi Indoor Electric Grill? It looks pretty sweet. I may need to try it out this winter!
CAN I ADD SLICED CHEESE TO BURGERS IN THE AIR FRYER?
Wait until you take the burgers out of the air fryer before you add cheese slices. Why? Well, because the fan in the air fryer is powerful and it will blow that cheese right off your burgers and create quite a mess in your machine!
That's a pretty beautiful burger, isn't it? Ready to add some condiments?
Burger toppings are key to a perfect burger, but so are the condiments!
WHAT ARE THE BEST BURGER CONDIMENTS?
I keep things simple with a big dollop of ketchup, but in addition to ketchup, go ahead and try some of these:
- Mustard
- Aioli
- Ranch
- Mayo
- Salsa
- BBQ sauce
- Relish
- Steak sauce
- Sriracha chili sauce
- Horseradish
Whatever you choose to top your burger with, I hope you enjoy!

Notes
- Quality Ground Beef Selection: Opt for ground beef with a higher fat content, such as an 80/20 lean-to-fat ratio, for juicier and more flavorful burgers. The fat content helps keep the burgers moist and prevents them from becoming dry during cooking. Avoid leaner ground beef varieties, as they may result in drier burgers, especially when cooking in the air fryer.
- Uniform Patty Thickness: Ensure that the burger patties are formed to a consistent thickness, approximately ½ inch thick, to promote even cooking. Using your hands, gently shape the ground beef mixture into patties, taking care not to overwork the meat, which can lead to tough burgers. Consistent thickness ensures that the burgers cook evenly and reach the desired level of doneness without any undercooked or overcooked spots.
- Temperature Monitoring: While air-frying the burgers, monitor the internal temperature to ensure they reach a safe level of doneness. Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the burgers. For medium-rare burgers, aim for an internal temperature of 130–135°F (54–57°C), while for medium burgers, aim for 140–145°F (60–63°C). Adjust the cooking time accordingly based on your desired level of doneness to ensure perfectly cooked burgers every time.
