You guys, the Green Bay Packers are one step closer to the Super Bowl! We've been glued to the television the past few weekends and this next weekend will be no different. . .SO, with that being said, we need some amazing food to nosh on while we watch the big game.
Today, I'm sharing the recipe for Million Dollar Dip. I promise that you can throw this dip together in just a matter of minutes. It's a sour cream/mayo-based dip filled with shredded cheese, bacon pieces, green onions and slivered almonds.
It's a classic from the 1950's and remains a crowd-pleaser, even today. Let's get mixing!
HOW TO MAKE MILLION DOLLAR DIP
To make this easy dip, you'll need only six ingredients:
- Sour cream
- Mayonnaise
- Green onions
- Cheddar cheese
- Bacon
- Slivered almonds
Add the cheese, bacon, green onions and slivered onions, sour cream and mayo to a mixing bowl and combine all of the ingredients.
Chill the dip for at least two hours in the fridge before serving.
IS THIS ALSO KNOWN AS NIEMAN MARCUS DIP?
There's no fooling you, is there? You are absolutely, correct. This recipe was made famous by New York native, Helen Corbitt, who served as Director of Food Services at Neiman Marcus’ flagship Zodiac Restaurant in Dallas, Texas.
She created it for the restaurant in the 1950’s, and it was later published in her cookbook, as “Almond-Bacon-Cheese Spread” where it gained its popularity over the years.
DO I NEED TO USE "FRESH" BACON IN THIS DIP?
If you're short on time, there's nothing wrong with using pre-cooked bacon pieces. I do it all the time, especially in the summer when I have no desire to be in the kitchen. Bacon isn't "the star" ingredient in this dish so it's okay to go the pre-cooked route.
CAN MILLION DOLLAR DIP BE PREPARED AHEAD OF TIME?
YES! And in fact, I recommend it! Million Dollar Dip actually tastes even better after the flavors have had a chance to "meld" for a few hours.
HOW SHOULD MILLION DOLLAR DIP BE STORED?
Store any leftover dip in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days. Before serving, just give the dip a good stir to refresh all of the ingredients and then serve.
CAN I FREEZE MILLION DOLLAR DIP?
No, just don't. It's because of the mayo. Mayo just doesn't freeze well. Freezing breaks down the emulsion and causes separation and other textural changes that I don't think you would be happy with. Make this dip and eat it within two days.
HOW SHOULD I SERVE MILLION DOLLAR DIP?
To keep the dip chilled and at a "safe" temperature, try placing the bowl of dip in a larger bowl filled with crushed ice. For parties, it works really well and removes the anxiety around whether or not it's been out at room temperature too long.
WHAT SHOULD I SERVE MILLION DOLLAR DIP WITH?
Oh gosh, well, the options are pretty much endless. Here are a few ideas:
- Pretzels
- Tortilla chips
- Ritz crackers
- Fritos
- Saltine crackers
- Club crackers
- Wheat thins
- Toasted bread
- Veggies like cucumbers, carrots, squash, zucchini, or celery sticks
