With Mother's Day weekend upon us, I think this may be one of our most low key years of all. Since we're still under our stay-at-home order we don't have any travel plans. But, that doesn't mean we won't be celebrating the special ladies in our lives.

While, it makes me sad we won't be celebrating with our extended families, I'm hopeful we will see them soon. Until then, we're going to celebrate this weekend as best as we can - and it all begins with this delicious Air Fryer French Toast.

What better way to start the morning, than with thick pieces of French toast covered in fresh berries and syrup?! No need to heat the oven, we're making this French toast in the air fryer!

HOW TO MAKE AIR FRYER FRENCH TOAST:

To make French toast in the air fryer, you just need a few ingredients:

    • Thick-sliced brioche bread
    • Eggs
    • Heavy whipping cream
    • Vanilla
    • Butter
    • Sugar
    • Cinnamon

Brioche bread is a French bread enriched with butter and eggs. It's ultra soft, rich and buttery!

WHAT IF I CAN'T FIND BRIOCHE BREAD?

No worries! If you can’t find brioche bread, you can use French bread, Texas toast or Challah (which usually doesn't contain dairy products).

Once you have the right bread in hand, we can start making the French toast!

In a mixing bowl, whisk eggs, heavy whipping cream, and vanilla together.

Dredge two pieces of bread in the egg mixture, covering both sides.

Place the pieces of bread in the oil-spritzed air fryer basket, making sure they aren’t touching.

Set the air fryer to 360º Fahrenheit and cook for 8 minutes, flipping halfway through.

While the bread is toasting, combine the sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl and set it aside.

When browned, brush the pieces of toast with melted butter and generously sprinkle with sugar/cinnamon mixture.

Continue the process with the remaining pieces of bread and then pile on the toppings!

    FRENCH TOAST DIPPING TIP

Remember that you're just "dipping" the bread slices into the egg mixture. Don't allow the bread slices to sit in the egg mixture for too long or you'll have "water-logged" bread that will take longer to cook through.

WHAT SHOULD I SERVE ON TOP OF FRENCH TOAST?

I'm pretty traditional. I love my French toast topped with maple syrup, a little fresh fruit and sometimes a dollop of whipped cream. Some other delicious additions might be a little coconut or sprinkles (for the kids, of course).

    CAN I FREEZE FRENCH TOAST?

Yes! Cook the French toast according to the recipe instructions and allow to cool on a wire rack. Arrange the pieces of toast in a single layer on a baking sheet and place into the freezer until firmly frozen, about 30 minutes.

Store the slices in a heavy-duty freezer bag or other airtight container. Use the frozen French toast within 1 to 2 months for best quality.

To serve from frozen, you can reheat the toast in your air fryer, toaster oven or oven. I wouldn't reheat it in the microwave - it will most likely end up soft and soggy.

I'm new to the air fryer, so this may be a stupid question, but when you need to make multiple servings (for more than one person), you would need to use the air fryer a few more times if you can only put 2 slices in at a time. Does re-using the air fryer a few times in a row without cleaning in between cause any issues with the air fryer? Like burning food, burning drippings, lots of smoke, etc.

If you're making a few batches of the same thing you should be fine. Cleaning between "uses" however is very important. Hope that makes sense and answers your question!
